The ring around the central boss is made of 16 segments (one for each wind direction) coloured dark red to bright yellow, according to how many of the last 15 readings were in that direction.
The effect is to illustrate the mean direction and the spread. I think this is more useful than just smoothing the direction values.
As you can see, today in Caerphilly we have a gentle northerly wind, but the vane has been swinging about a little bit either side of north. Right now it is NNW.
So far there is no weighting with wind speed. Possibly I could display a weighted statistic as well as or instead of this.
